Sciatica Treatment

At North Norfolk Osteopaths we offer sciatica treatment for people in Dereham, Fakenham and surrounding areas.

Sciatica is pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and all the way down both legs to the feet.  When the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed it can cause pain, numbness or tingling which travels down one leg.  Some people with sciatica may also experience muscle weakness in the affected leg.

Back pain  may also be experienced along with the leg pain, but typically the leg pain is much more severe than the low back pain. Sciatica pain symptoms are often described as electric shocks, or searing burning pain running down the back or side of the leg.

Sciatic pain can vary from person to person.  Whilst for some it is infrequent and irritating, for others the pain can be constant and incapacitating.  Specific sciatica symptoms can be different in location and severity, depending on what is  causing the sciatica.

Common symptoms of sciatica

  • Constant pain on one side in the buttock or leg, occasionally both sides are affected
  • Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and runs down the back of the thigh, into the lower leg and foot, along the path of the sciatic nerve
  • Pain that eases when lying down or walking about
  • Pain that worsens when standing or sitting
  • Pain that is sharp, searing or like an electric shock, rather than dull or achey
  • Pins and needles or numbness down the thigh, lower leg or foot
  • Weakness in the affected leg

We offer high quality care from qualified experienced Osteopaths.  Our Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage.  Manupulative and massage therapies such as Osteopathy have been shown to provide effective sciatica pain relief for many patients.

At your initial consultation we will take a detailed history of your current symptoms and carry out a thorough examination. Our Osteopaths will discuss what their findings show and explain what treatment they feel will help reduce or allieviate your pain.

The treatments our Osteopaths offer are focussed on providing better spinal column alignment, muscle balance and tissue health, which can help to address a number of underlying conditions that can cause sciatic nerve pain.  When treatment addresses the cause of the problem it can create a better healing environment.

Each treatment is tailored to the individual needs of the patient and aims to reduce symptoms, alleviate pain and improve mobility and function.

At North Norfolk Osteopaths our treatment also involves rehabilitation, self-care, exercise and postural advice to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
